I have been around for over half a century, and writing song parodies for a good bit of that time. (I'm not good enough to come up with original material.) As a matter of fact, I just ran across the first parody I ever wrote--while our family was waiting in the rain for a motel to open. It is based on Jimmie Rodgers' "Waiting for a Train". I was 14 at the time.
This "habit" was probably inspired by my Dad, who was a funny man and could make up some funny lines. Other influences include Homer and Jethro, Weird Al Yankovic, and Stan Freberg.
Many thanks to my lovely wife, who never takes my jokes about marriage seriously--and has been known to throw a zinger herself once in a while!
