Hi, I just thought I'd create another critique thread here..
There are several critique threads on here where the host is either absent or has stopped responding, or just quit..So I felt there was a need for a new critique thread!

As for me, I've been singing most of my life..And have learned a lot too.
I am fairly knowledgeable on vocals and also the recording end of things too.

I feel that I have a pretty good ear for pitch and timing and for listening for any errors there may be.

I know I'm not the best singer in the world..But I think I do ok..
Everyone has their moments, no one can sing everything perfect,,that's just a fact.

However, I think almost everyone can improve in some way or another.
When other people listen to your recordings..they may hear things that you're not aware of?

When I listen to the entry's in here..I will be listening closely at your vocal quality, your pitch, your timing, your
emotion, and your quality of recording too,,I will be listening for any errors that I can find.
And I will give you my honest opinion on what I hear, and what I think can be done (if anything) to improve your recording.

justadreamer

Edited reply by justadreamerGOLD

So if you are up to this..and want an honest opinion on your recording from me..
Then post away!

But remember this is just one mans opinion here.."mine"..you don't have to take what I say to heart, it's just my opinion,
Nothing more..

I'd also like to say that,,if you're just wanting a nice sugar coated comment about your song, and do not want to hear any actual advice..
Then I'd recommend that you post your song somewhere else..cause this IS a critique thread.

Also,,I'd like to add..lets keep this to a 1 song per member per day posting to make things fair for others too..
Plus it will be easier on me to keep up too!

As an added bonus to this thread..I have made a "best performances" banner that I will be posting in here as well..

All of the members that I feel have (Top Notch recordings) will have their pictures posted onto the spotlight banner.
So if your picture makes it there..It means to me.. that you have submitted a perfect or very near perfect recording!
And you should be on the banner for others to see!

Oh,,one other thing...I won't be giving you a critique in your song comments..I will only post a "thank you" banner on your song..I may say a comment or two as well..but when you see the thank you banner in your song,,you will know that I have made a critique in here on your recording...

You may also request to have your critique in privet too by pm if you prefer...If you do..please say so when you post your song..

This is what the little banner will look like..

Banner testing ...I'm still working on ideas for this thread..

I just made this one,,I may use a banner like this, and the entry's that I feel are the (most perfect recordings) will have their song links posted below the banner...

Okay,I didn't start singing til i joined here in 2006,been working on breathing, anunciation, recording settings and so forth. For the longest time,I think what was always missing was the emotion,so for the past few months have been working on feeling the songs.hopefully I'm getting there.

Thanks for your entry here Darryl!..
First off I'd like to say I do love this song too!
And you sang it very nicely too!..

I think your emotion and pitch were pretty good too..Your word timing was pretty much perfect on the first and second verses..the 3rd verse had some very slight issues..but backing up a bit..on the line (you just don't realize how much I love you) the last "You" should be a little bit longer and climb to a higher octave on that word..So just some very slight issues there..

Over all you did a very nice job with the song and it was enjoyable to listen to!

On the recording side of things..I think if you could add just a touch more echo..it would enhance your vocals even more.
Also,,there are some slight issues with the mixer timing in the recording..I can hear double drum beats..maybe try to remix it 1 mark one way or the other..if that doesn't work,it may be a internet speed problem..

I have solved most of my timing issues using a digital interface,,I had the same slight timing problems in my songs too before I started using it..

Over all you did a great job on your song vocally..just some slight issues to work on..I hope to hear more from you too..and I hope some of what I said will be of some help to you too!..So..Keep on singing!!

Thank you very much! Will definitely give it a go.As for remixing,I can't,I don't use the stereo feature,it has never worked right for me,so I record in mono. Will try a lil more reverb though and for the double drum beats, maybe I should start using headphones?

justadreamer

Reply by justadreamerGOLD

YVW Darryl!....Yes I think headphones will help on the double beats problem..

justadreamer

Edited reply by justadreamerGOLD

You only want your mic to be picking up your vocals..if anything else is recorded other than your vocals..it WILL cause a problem in the final mix..cause S/s adds your vocal track to the karaoke music..and if your mic picks up the drum sounds along with your vocals..then in the final mix there will be 2 sets of drums playing...

Edited reply by darryl

Excellent advice! Will start shopping for a pair and see if that helps.I just got my new mixer and mic recently, and was thinking that my settings would be a BIG issue, glad it doesn't seem that way! :o)

Ok..get you some good ones!..You should be able to find some pretty nice ones for around 50 to $60..My wife got some Sennhiser's for around that price.they sound pretty good too..

I like the wireless kind..I use some 900mhz wireless headphones..if you go wireless just make sure they aren't IR..(infer Red type)..those aren't to good..they only work in the same room as the PC..My 900mhz wireless can work even outside the house!..hehe..I've even test them all the way out to my mailbox listening to a s/s song!!,And it's 100 ft from the house too!

Yea,, they both are probably nice headphones..I cant personally say cause I dont own either brand..but I think personally..I'd go with JVC over the Sony's...My wife had a pair of sony's a few months ago and they didn't impress me much,,her either,,that's why she got the Sennheiser's

Hiya

Okay since I am not entered in any contests right now, I will brave my time here and be the second victim. Please be gentle, lol. Public is okay with me. Like you said singers can't be perfect all the time. And there is always room for improvement.

You and I have talked about the "shhh sound'. Since I have done everthing I can to fix it, I am pretty sure it is my card. You will probably hear it. This song was not the easiest (I'm into self-inflicted musical torture..hehehe).

Hi Jubi!!..

This is a beautiful song..
And you sang this flawlessly too!
Your pitch and timing are perfect!

I actually compared your rendition to Linda Eder's version,
And I think you even out performed hers!
Your vibrato to me is smoother than hers too..
A very enjoyable performance! Very Well done!
Vocally, I cannot find anything wrong with your recording.

I believe you've earned a place in the spot light with this performance! Congratulations!

So humbled. Although I would never consider myself even close to Linda Eder (she has become one of my newest singing idols), your words have blown me away. Wow, thank you so very much for this great critique. I wasn't expecting this at all, lol.

Hi bubbaglenn!
Thanks so much for submitting this song..

I've listen to this a few times now..
I think you did a wonderful rendition here!..Your vibrato is toned very nicely ..very steady. Your pitch is very near perfect too,,your timing is too. You've an awesome sing here!
Very controlled and a pleasure to listen to!
I believe you've earned the second position in the spotlight with this performance!

My only suggestion (as far as recording quality) would be to perhaps look into a higher quality mic when you can,,
You've got a lot of range and a better mic will bring that out for you!..However I still feel this deserves being in the spotlight, vocally it is very near perfect!

Very well done!!,,Congratulations!

thanks for the input friend. I am actually considering looking into investing in a new mic when I have a little extra left in my budget (who knows when that will be lol) the one i'm usong now is actually a headset..that I dont use the headset on. I just leave it sitting on top of the computer . Can't say I know enough about them but will do some research. Honored to be included in your sporlight

Hi, again. I have a problem with a lot of white noise in my recordings. It drives me nuts! Do i need to buy a higher quality mic, or is there some way my settings should be adjusted that I don't know about? I'm not very tech-savvy.

Hi aligirl66!
http://www.singsnap.com/karaoke/r/b37802aaa
Thanks for your submitting your song in here..

This is a great song too..And I think you sang this very nicely,,
Your timing is very good..your pitch is too..but yea there is a pretty good level of white noise in your recording? You've got a great voice but the level of noise does take a lot away from your recording..

Some things that may cause excessive white noise are.
Bad cords,,or bad sound card, those are like the 2 main things.Your settings can cause some level of noise too..
Sometimes if a person already has a fairly high level of white noise and then they use the MMSB option too..then the noise will be even more,,it will be the most noticeable before the song starts and in paused spots...

Before investing in any upgrading though..you could try adjusting your settings..check in your PC settings first..your WAV volume should be near the top. Your mic should be near the top too..Cause if your wave volume is near the bottom in your PC settings,,but in the S/S mixer it's at the top..it may cause white noise..Once you have your levels set that way in your PC settings..Then on the S/s mixer..they should be similar or just below how they are in your PC settings..
I record with the S/s mixer @ around 60% to 70% on both mic and music..If you adjust your settings and there is no change..or if they already are set this way,,then a new sound card may be the next thing to try..
Hope some of that helps!..The main thing is ,Keep on singing!

I think you've picked a great song too!..You Sang this song with ease..Your pitch and timing was great too!.This was a great performance,,There's not much that I can critique on your vocals or the recording quality here..I like the fact that you didn't use much effects too..it let the clarity of the words stand out more..Over all this was a great performance, and I believe you've earned the next position in the spotlight..Congratulations!
