Welcome To Totally Harmony Plus

For those that to love listen and/or sing harmony with yourself or others.

!!THIS IS NOT A CONTEST!!.

This thread is for those that love listen and sing harmony, to learn from each other and ask questions or leave comments on how to get the most out of your recordings

Please feel free to post songs that you have either sang harmony with yourself or others.

So what Is Harmony?
Music consists of three main elements—melody, rhythm, and harmony. While the first two are typically accountable for making a piece of music memorable—think of the opening motif of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, or Timbaland’s synth lick on the Jay-Z song “Dirt Off Your Shoulder”—it’s the third element, harmony, that can elevate a piece from common and predictable to challenging and sophisticated.

Harmony is the composite product when individual musical voices group together to form a cohesive whole. Think of an orchestra: the flute player may be playing one note, the violinist plays a different note, and the trombonist plays yet a different note. But when their individual parts are heard together, harmony is created.

When listen to a song or someone singing if you are only hearing the harmony part alone many times you will think it sounds off or to be blunt just sounds bad. But if heard together with the lead parts it can be outstanding. I know people that only sing harmony and when alone it sounds like there is something missing, It's the same with instruments.

Like when our kids are in band and at home learning their part. I know for me I would think"oh no, he/she is never going to get it" but when they play at school with all the rest of the kids your are filled with pride as you hear the finished product with all the kids doing their part.

It is the same when singing harmony the end product can make the listener feel every note. Harmony is not as easy as we think it is and not for everyone but anyone can do it with a little practice. It's not the same as singing in unison for sure but once we understand what it is it can be so much fun to do.

When recording on SingSnap there are a few things that can make or break a recording when it comes to doing harmonies. The 2 main things are the timing and volume of the recording we are laying down over the original recording.

These are also the same issues many of us face when recording on SingSnap or any other site like this one be it a lead vocal or harmony part. If you have a question about how this works please feel free to ask. We are not here to judge anyone only to help you be happier with your recordings.

Who's up for a little fun?

This is a really fun song to do harmony on. I layed down the lead part and did 1 harmony part already and would love to build it from there.

http://www.singsnap.com/karaoke/r/baa22becf

If you would like to join in on it here's what we'll do.
First, post that you want in, and I'll add you to the list below. Once you have recorded you part either post it back on this thread or send me a link in PM and we can review for timing and blending (Mix) before adding to it.
Remember, When doing overlays the key to making a good recording is getting the mix right before adding to it. If it's not right once you have recorded over it there is nothing that can be done about it.

Once done and posted the next one in line can lay down there part and so on.

So whos next?

Lets have some fun with this or if there is a song any of you would like to do like this pitch it out here, I'm sure we all would love to jump in on them.

Lets make some sweet HARMONY

Due to a 5 year medical issue with excessive coughing, I've been unable to sing the last couple of years. I'm better now, but struggling to get control of my voice. I doubt I could contribute much to challenge right now.

*OK folks, I have a little challenge for us*

Below are a few links to some songs that have no BG singers.

So here's the challenge.

We need someone grab one (or all) and lay down the lead track then bring it back here once done and one at a time we can add a layer of harmony down on it.

In this challenge we will work in timing and blending using the mixer.

Just remember not to add the next layer until we have the timing and blending done and keep in mind you don't need to sing word for word on harmony. Lets let the lead have the lead and add harmony where you feel it. LOL

I'll post "Ready" next to the link for your recording and the next one in line can do their part and so on. I'm going to do my best to stay out you guys way on these and just be here to help with blending and timing.

If any of you have a song in mind and or already have done and want to post it here please feel free to do so.
I'm sure we all would love to join in and sing with you.

The List

Be sure to post the name of the song you want to do here so I can get it on the list.

Hi folks - I've had a crack at I Can See Clearly Now with Tim and it's an Infinite Duet now (keep adding layers). Remember if you do add a layer - in the mixing make sure that Voice is to the right of center or less than Music side on the slidebar (adding layers sometimes diminishes the previous layers)

I’m still on the road and have not had much time the last week or so. I’ll update the thread as soon as I have a chance to log in on my laptop. This mobile app is not as friendly as I wish it was.
With any luck I may make it home by the 5th

Here’s kind of an obscure song by Kenny Rogers and Dottie West. My dad had their album on 8 track and I loved it. Used to listen to it all the time. I did both parts by myself, but I would love it if a brave guy (or deep voiced lady) finished the duet with me.

That’s the Way It Could Have Been
