Are You Ready To Rewrite History?

Welcome to our latest and greatest SingSnap Official Contest! Our contests have been a ton of fun in the past but this one is even more special because we have listened to the masses and have made a slight change for this particular contest. This will be an Audio-Only contest where the grand prizes will be awarded based 100% on Singing Quality, Emotional Engagement and Story Telling! We will have a Bonus Prize for Round Two, but we'll announce that later.

Contest Objective:

This contest is still not necessarily searching for the best singer, as there are many components involved. There are definitely points up for grabs for vocal techniques, but there will also be points available for emotional engagement, creativity, story telling and song selection!

The contest will be Two Rounds (2) total and is also considered a "Duet" contest! You will require a partner for this contest and it is your responsibility to select a partner. If you need assistance and want to post your interest and/or solicit a partner, feel free to visit the following thread and remember - read carefully!

Rewrite Partnership Call Thread

Non-Elimination

This will be a non-elimination contest. Every duet pairing who enters for Round One will be permitted to submit a song for Round two and will be in the running for one of the Grand Prizes. Each song will be scored by five members of our Invited Judging Panel.

Contest Format

As mentioned previously, the contest will consist of Two Rounds. In Round One, each member of the duet pair will sing a solo song. In Round Two, the duet pair will submit one duet performance. The total for all three songs (Two Solos and One Duet) will be combined for one over-all score.

The judging will be based on Audio-Only. With that said, if you wish to sing on Video or create a special video for Round One - you are more than welcome! It will just not count towards your scoring.

The Schedule

Each round will be one week long. Round two will commence May 14, 2014. A new thread will be posted which will announce the Rewrite Challenge for Round Two. If you do not submit an entry for Round One, you will not be eligible for Round Two. You must submit a song in both rounds to be considered for a prize.

Round One: May 6 - May 13
Round Two: May 14 - May 21

The Judging Panel

There will be a judging panel made up of 15 judges from the SingSnap community. Each entry will be randomly assigned to five judges who will score your performance based upon the scoring criteria provided to them by SingSnap Staff. Please see below for both the Invited Judging Panel and the Scoring Criteria.

The Prizes

The invited panel will judge both rounds and deliver a Top Ten. Each Member of the top ten is guaranteed a One Month Gold Membership. SingSnap Staff will then judge the Top Ten and award the following prizes;

First Place: One Year Gold Membership (to Each Member of the Duet Pair)
Second Place: Six Month Gold Membership (to Each Member of the Duet Pair)
Third Place: Three Month Gold Membership (to Each Member of the Duet Pair)

Award Schedule

The Top Ten will be announced within 72 hours of the completion of Round Two. The Grand Prize Winners will be announced by May 30, 2014.

Rewrite: Theme Explained

Have you ever read a story and thought, "Man, I wish that had a different ending!" Well that is exactly what this contest is about. We are going on a journey back through time and this is your chance to change history!

Chapter One Requirements:

If you would like to enter this contest, here is the Round One information. While it is necessary to have a partner for this contest - you will not be singing a duet this round. You will both submit a solo performance. One person will be responsible for submitting both songs at the same time, please read carefully!

Chapter One: We have provided Eight (8) Historical Duos and supplied a brief synopsis of their relationship and history. Your first challenge is to get together with your partner and select one Duo. Click Here For Possible Duos.

You then must each select one member of your chosen Duo to portray in your performance. We want you to imagine you ARE that person. Half of the historical pair you and your partner has chosen. Read up on your character and get to know them in their current story. You are NOT re-writing the story just yet. (That comes in Round 2) We then want you to choose any song in the SingSnap Catalog that you feel represents that character in the story, as we know it today. How are they feeling? What do they want out of life?

Example: If you and your partner choose Romeo and Juliet, one of you must pretend you're Romeo, the other pretend you're Juliet. Your solo performances should represent how your character is feeling in the current story. Juliet is young, in love, torn between her heart and her family. She doesn't know what to do! Romeo is the same but determined to find a plan. He is lost without his one true love by his side! (This is just an example of how they could feel. Find songs that display those emotions!

In your song comment section you must;

A. Tell us your Partners SingSnap Name
B. Your Chosen Duo
C. Which Half of the Duo you are portraying
D. Why you chose the song you did and how you feel it relates to your character.

Remember, this story component itself is worth 5 points! Ensure you do your homework, get to know the character and choose your song wisely. Make sure there is no doubt in the judges mind as to why you chose the song you did and how it relates to your character.

Judging Criteria:

Vocals: There will be a possible 30 points available for your vocal performance. Be sure to select a song that allows you to not only show off the best aspects of your voice but also gives you the best chance to emote!

1. Pitch & Tone - 5 Points: Are you singing the song in a pitch/key that suits your voice? Are the individual notes on point? Do you go off key? Does your voice have a pleasant tone that fits the song?

2. Phrasing/Enunciation - 5 Points: Is your voice clear and concise? Do you sing the song with the correct phrasing? Do you hold and end the notes well?

3. Emotional Engagement - 10 Points: Do you connect with the song and deliver it with conviction? Make us 'believe' in the song and that you're telling your story. This is a huge category. Remember to select a song that not only YOU can relate to but that your audience can connect with as well!

4. Overall Song Choice: - 5 Points: Does the song showcase your voice? Does it fit tone? How well does your song choice challenge you? Is it a difficult song or way too easy? Do you make it 'sound' easy? Does it fit the Chapter One requirements?

5. Relating The Song: - 5 Points: For each round you will be required to write in your song comment section and relate the song to the Chapter's Requirements. For Chapter One: Does the song relate to your character? Does it show how they're feeling, what they're thinking? Ensure you connect the song to the character and explain your method of thinking in your Song Comment Section.

Bonnie and Clyde

Bonnie Parker was a part-time waitress and amateur poet married to an imprisoned murderer. Clyde Barrow was a fast-talking, small-time thief and once their fellow gang members were either killed or sent to prison, they joined forces and became the most notorious crime couple in American history.

The FBI joined in on the man hunt to capture this elusive couple. They concealed themselves in bushes along the highway near Sailes, Louisiana. In the early daylight, Bonnie and Clyde appeared in an automobile and when they attempted to drive away, the officers opened fire. Bonnie and Clyde were killed instantly.
At the time they were killed in 1934, they were believed to have committed 13 murders and several robberies and burglaries.

Tips On How To Rewrite This Story: Perhaps Bonnie gets pregnant, maybe her husband gets out of Jail, what if they decide to settle down and choose an ordinary, legal life? Or what if they never actually got caught?

Antony and Cleopatra

Marcus Antonius of Rome and Cleopatra VII Philopator the Queen of Ancient Egypt shared a hostile love affair like no other that lives on today, over two thousand years after their tragic deaths. Rumor has it that Antony neglected his duties at the Roman Empire to conduct a decadent affair with Queen Cleopatra. When he received word of his wife's death, Antony returned to Rome only to be greeted by a disgruntled Octavius Caesar. In an effort to save the Roman Empire and show his allegiance, Antony wed Caesar's sister Octavia. The brotherhood was short-lived and Caesar turned on Antony, forcing him to return to Egypt. After reuniting with Cleopatra, they were both at war with Caesar and are soon led to believe that they have each betrayed one another.

Cleopatra hears word that Antony wants to have her killed for her betrayal so she sends him word of her suicide. Grief stricken, Antony eventually fatally wounds himself by his own sword but did not die before one final good-bye with his lover Cleopatra. Cleopatra catches wind of Caesar's new plan to display her in Rome and ends her own life by way of poisonous snakes. Caesar has her buried beside Antony.

Tips On How To Rewrite This Story: What if Antony left Cleopatra for good? What if Cleopatra never faked her death? What if Cleopatra actually loved Caesar?

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is a love story of two young lovers who each belong to separate established families in a long-standing quarrel in Verona. The families are the Capulets and the Montagues. Romeo and Juliet cannot profess their love publicly so Juliet concocts a plan and drinks a vial of sleeping potion. Due to a lost letter, Romeo never learns of this plot and believes his precious love to be dead. He kills himself by drinking poison, preventing the young couple from experiencing happiness on earth. Juliet then kills herself to spend eternity with Romeo.

Tips On How To Rewrite This Story: What if their families supported them? What if they just ran away and hid? What if Romeo did receive the letter alerting him of Juliet 's plan? What if Juliet didn't kill herself?

Romulus and Remus

Romulus and Remus were twin brothers born to Rhea Silvia, the King’s Daughter and fathered by the god of Mars. Soon after their birth the King’s brother, Amulius seized power of the kingdom. To keep his power he had to remove all the male heirs so had the twins put into a basket that was then placed into the River Tiber.

The basket eventually ran aground after a series of miraculous interventions and the twins were discovered by a female wolf that suckles them and a woodpecker that feeds them. Days later a shepherd and his wife find them and foster them to manhood, as simple shepherds.

When Romulus and Remus became adults, they decided to create a city where the wolf had found them. The brothers fought over where the site should be and Remus was killed by his brother. This left Romulus the sole founder of the new city and he gave his name to it – Rome.

Tips On How To Rewrite This Story: What if the brothers agreed on a location? What if one of the brothers married and left his brother? What if they were never removed and lived as Kings?

Cain and Abel

Cain and Abel were sons of Adam and Eve that one day made an offering to God. Cain who was a farmer offered God produce from the land and Abel who was a Shepherd offered his best stock from his flock. God favored Abel’s offering over his brother’s, which made Cain very upset. Allowing his jealousy to get the better of him, Cain lead his brother away on a walk where he then killed him.

Tips On How To Rewrite This Story: What if God favored Cain's offering? What if Cain didn't get jealous and kill his brother? What if his brother killed Cain in self defense?

Anne and Mary Boleyn

Anne Boleyn was Queen of England as the second wife of King Henry VIII. Mary was Anne's sister and was also rumored to have been a mistress to King Henry VIII and bore two children by him. Mary had a secret marriage to a man considered beneath her station which angered both Henry VIII and her sister, Queen Anne, and resulted in Mary's banishment from the royal court; she spent the remainder of her life in obscurity.

Henry had Anne investigated for high treason in April 1536. On 2 May she was arrested and sent to the Tower of London, where she was tried before a jury of peers – which included Henry Percy, her former betrothed, and her own uncle, Thomas Howard – and found guilty on 15 May. She was beheaded four days later.

Tips On How To Rewrite This Story: What if Henry left Anne for Mary? What if Mary and Ann joined forces to make Henry pay for committing adultery?

The Wright brothers: Wilbur and Orville Wright

The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright were 7 & 11 when they received a toy helicopter from their father. Made of cork, bamboo, and paper, with a rubber band to twirl its twin blades, it was a little bigger than an adult's hand; the start to their aviation interest.

Years later the brothers built a printing press & published a daily paper. They later opened a bicycle shop and manufactured their own brand. Learning of the death of a German aviator and the interest of a French aviation researcher brought their interests back to flying and started experiments of their own. This resulted in their historic flight at Kitty Hawk, NC. Both made several significant flights in the years to come.

The brothers never married. Wilbur Wright died at age 45 of typhoid. Orville Wright died of a heart attack at age 77.

Tips On How To Rewrite This Story: Imagine one of the brothers did marry. Would the commitments of a wife and children keep one (or both) of them from their dream? What if the plane crashed and one died? What If one of the brothers had an illegitimate child ? What would it mean to their fortune?

Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller

Helen Keller was born with the ability to see and hear. However, a terrible illness at 19 Months old left her deaf and blind. Anne Sullivan was a school teacher hired by Helen’s father when Helen was 7 years old. Anne was able to teach Helen by spelling words out using her hand placed in Helen’s palm. With Anne’s teachings Helen Keller became the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. Their friendship would last for 49 years. Anne died at the age of 70 with Helen holding her hand and Helen died at 87.

Tips On How To Rewrite This Story: What would life be like for Helen if Anne didn't commit her life to her friend? What if Helen found love? Was there more to this friendship that you can elaborate on? What if Anne regained her hearing at some point? Would that have changed everything?

hehe It's just a lot of reading. But really, it's quite simple.

Find a partner. Choose a Historic Duo.
Round One: You each Sing a Song.

Round Two: You rewrite the ending, and sing a duet.

For Round One: The song is supposed to tell of your character from the duo, as we already know the story. As long as you can creatively link your chosen song with your character as we know them, then you can do whatever you like.

If you choose Juliet, you wouldn't want to do a song about her living to the ripe old age of 98, looking back at all her grand kids. Because in the story we know, she dies very young. So it wouldn't make sense.

You could do a song about her dreaming of that and realizing she's never going to have it. Whatever song you choose has to make sense with the story has it is written.

Does that make sense?

for ROUND TWO: You are re-telling the story of one of the characters. Parodies are against the site's terms of use.

Suppose you choose Romeo and Juliet. You re-write THEIR story in ROUND TWO, not a song. Rather than die by sword and poison, perhaps you decide they live. Perhaps Romeo kindnaps Juliet one night and they sail off to some far away land and live happily ever after.

The song you choose to duet with, in Round 2. Will represent your newly, re-written story.
