Enabling "Stereo Mix" in Vista

I hate to tell people the bad news, but the only way to record on vista is to add the very expensive creative sound blaster sound card. I have a realtech that came with my $1500.00 PC and it just wont work! Sound blaster is the only way, and be prepaired to spend an arm and a leg!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm running Vista and i have a realtek soundcard and have recorded from day one on this system with no probs at all.

i cannot set Stereo Mix as Default and your SETUP Wizard dont show me that ENABLED device as audio source...
btw: its not vista havin an issue. singsnap (as ksolo) havin an issue. If they would mux the tracks on serverside there wouldnt be such an issue. But muxing on client side has too many factors THEY HAVE to respect.
the emberassing fact about this is that this problem is known since 2006! watch your calendar! that was a couple of years ago!

hmm after some time i had the "chance" to set StereoMix as default. BUT
then i dont have ANY sound input anymore!!!
wether my voice or the background music is recorded anymore. great...
so ihave the choice between nothing is recorded OR only voice-is-recorded.... hmmm... pretty unsatisfying.

the majority of ppl has an issue with singsnap's recording-process because singsnap does not respect vistas new soundscheme.
so if you have a working solution you may post it here, but just saying that you never had any problems is just worthless for everybody.

I Had Windows Vista as my opertaing system. Like I said .. HAD .. not no more after trying to get my creative sound blaster sound card working. I gave up and called a couple people about repairing my computer so I could go back to Win XP .. It was a 60.00 well spent. He was telling me that Win Vista when installed on your machine gets into your mother board and recovery system. It is really hard to undo Vista and go back to XP without a computers repair person who know what their doing. I am so much happier with WinXp. I will never buy a machine with windows vista ever in my life. It was a nightmare. So If your at the end of your rope you migth want to say heck with it and go back with WinXP . Some People do get their Creative Sound Cards working with Vista but far and few in between. There might be a little bit of hope out there. Vista was released a week early for some reason ?. Then we all wonder why we have so many proublems with it. Good Luck :) .. Theresa

I've tried everything to get Vista to work.
I can hear my voice OR music, but never together. I didn't have this problem with XP.
Can anyone please help me?
My pc has Realtek HD Version 6.0.1.5477. I've tried to update it's driver but this version is up to date.
If anyone has any idea, please send a message.
Thanks,

Yea,
I just had to buy a new laptop because i accidentally broke my old one...and that one had XP on it...and the new one of course has SUCK ASS VISTA on it as well as realtek....
So of course, I got the stereo mix but no music only my voice...or no voice or music...
I am soooo bummed about this....:(
There has to be something that can be done....I am not about to spend another penny on something so I can sing...only cause I don't have it.....
However I am not going to keep the gold membership either...if i can't use SS because it does not support vista or realtek....sorry trevor and staff...it just SUCKS that there are these many problems....I love this site...but I am really mad and upset that the player does not support what most computers have these days!!!

SingSnap should come up to date, more & more of us are on Vista. You need to update your software to cope with the millions of us who are using Vista

lol wow. i'll take that cookie tyvm. sheeeesh!
i posted that in regards to the post above me that said the only way to record here was "to add the very expensive creative sound blaster sound card." maybe i should've been more specific as to why i said what i did. sorry gang. i certainly wasn't making light of anyone's frustration. i just wanted to say that it's not the only way to record here.
guess i was one of the lucky ones that got it to work by following Jason's instructions.
sorry if i just caused more frustration =(
One thing I did have to do recently because for whatever reason, my settings were messed up. I had a mic but my no music. When I redid the Setup Wizard, I had to set my Recording device to "Stereo Mix (Realtek High Definition)"
I hope that helps anyone that's not looked there. Other than following Jason's instructions and that, I guess I'm not much help =(

Nooooooooo!!!!!! Don't buy a sound card just yet!
I sat here and messed around with mine for about 2 hours straight this morning and I have it figured out!
I am not saying that this will work for everyone but it most certainly worked for me. It is worth a try.(:
I have a Dell pc and it came equiped with the realtech sound card as well.
I was about to give up when I decided to go into my stereo mix and try one last thing.
The only thing different that I did was check "pitch shift"
Then I ran the wizard on ss and boom! all of the sudden my mixer started working and then I went and recorded.
Everything sounds great again after fooling with the equalizer!
Please try this before you give up hope.
Let me know if it worked for you k.
Hugs and good luck!

THIS IS WHAT I HAD TO DO TO GET MY SOUNDBLASTER CARD TO WORK ON MY NEW VISTA COMPUTER. I HAD TO DOWNLOAD A DRIVER FOR VISTA AND THEN THE STEREO OR WHAT YOU HEAR APPEARED AND I AM RECORDING. YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THE RIGHT DRIVER FOR VISTA, I THEN FOLLOWED ALL THE PRIOR SUGGESTIONS
Reply by jimspiano
First off, I think we can all agree that Vista sucks! Second, I've tried all the suggestions on these boards and have not been successful with any of them. Third, there is a way to record using Vista without spending a whole lot of money.
What I would do is this: get yourself an inexpensive 2-channel mixing board. Peavey makes them, Behringer, Yamaha, Mackie ... all the major brands. Then, run a 1/8 inch cord from your headphone output jack on your pc into one of the channels on your mixing board. Plug your microphone into the second channel on the board. (You may need a 1/8 to 1/4 inch converter adapter to plug your cords into the mixing board. These are incredibly cheap. You can get them at WalMart or even the Dollar Store maybe.) THEN, once you have your 2 inputs connected, run a cord from the output jack on the mixing board to the microphone jack on your PC.
In Windows, set your default recording source as Microphone (NOT stereo mix). This way the microphone input source on your pc is being fed BOTH the music and your voice through one channel via your mixing board. A nice thing about doing it this way is that you have total control over the music and your voice on your mixing board. You can set the tone (highs, mids, lows) on both channels as well as the input volume for each.
You can look for mixing boards at your local Radio Shack, or go online to www.musiciansfriend.com.
I'm a musician who's also a techie so I know a lot of shortcuts and backdoors when it comes to this stuff.
If I've totally confused you and you're still interested in trying my method, please send me a Private Message, or send me an email to jplays88@yahoo.com. I'm also on AIM as jimplayspiano and on Yahoo Messenger as jplays88.
Thanks! And good luck to ya!

Wow. Five months and still nobody's answered my question.
I still have the following choices: music only or voice only. Or unplug the headphones and sing with music playing loudly so the mic can pick it up.
I have WaveOutMix enabled. I don't have Stereo Mix or What U Hear even with hidden items showing.
Many people have suggested changing the sliders in Playback Devices -> Speakers -> Levels, but there's only one slider for me there and it doesn't match anything anyone else has said. It says "Internal Speaker/Headphone."
I posted five months ago and still haven't solved this problem. If anyone has gmail and thinks they can help, I can be reached through gmail chat at doggah@gmail.com. But for now I guess I'm done here.

Okay, so I right clicked in my speaker box, but no "What you hear shows up." All that shows up is a pic of cable wires that says "Line In." Am I missing something from my computer?

Updated my operating system. Now can't record til new computer arrives :(
I had a look at the discussion threads on microsfts site. It appears Vista removed the "wav" out feature in an Anti-piracy attempt; completly disregarding the creative shackles this adds.
So, until a patch is developed ( 3-4 months is the feeling there) the options are either get a soundcard from company that seems on the ball (ie they realise Microsoft are f**k**g amateurs when it comes to product testing) or try the reroute option.
off to try and find cabling...ofcourse if anyone finds a patch, lemme know!!

OK I played with the right clicky thing and I now can hear my voice and music in playback. However, the music is low...quiet...but at least I can hear it...
Help on settings to get it louder...

I'm told Jason is working on it and will be testing a beta model soon (like i know what that means but it sounds like a real effort is underway) Keep the faith guys we'll be back soon.
Reply by Lazarus71
As someone posted earlier people with creative cards will no longer even be able to get the "what you hear" settings because Creative has decided for some stupid reason to not support this feature and probably never will.

the only problem that i have with recording is that there is a loud buzzing in the background, other than that it's alright, but the music is kinda low too...

Well I have a new computer myself. I went from a Compaq to a New Dell Inspiron•531 and either its the sound or the speakers . I have the New Vista on my comp.>This really didn't work on my side..But I have on my dell a SOUND AFFECTS mixer so maybe if I adjust the sound of my speakers it;ll work my microphone in with it, since it is a handless microphone..I felt weird having to sing soo close to the speaker just so I can pick up sound thru the microphone to have it in the recording

Well guys, I did some digging around. And found out that those of us with vista don't have long to wait. "Sing Snap" is still in beta, which means they are still woking out some kinks. Seems they will be getting a new recording system sometime in June, So, all of us that can't hear the music ,but can hear our voice. Or, vise versa, will be getting some help. "Sing Snap" is still the best. I thought ok I'll just sign up with another karaoke site! Well, don't bother they just don't compare

I have the Vista problem here also. Right now i'm singing with my mic just picking up speaker sounds and have no 'Stereo Mix' or 'what you hear' . I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista and the Realtek built-in sound but it's not good at all. I have bought an external Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card which i thought would help but Creative didn't have 'What you Hear' on it, then I bought the Behringer UCA-202 mixer that so many on here had got and said worked for them. I've hooked it up just like the diagram for it on these posts, went and bough extra cable, etc.. i can hear sound but for some reason my mic doesn't work on it. I want to be able to mix my voice with singsnap music and use my mic, not the built-in mic on laptop. Can anyone help?
