this is not working for me - what you hear never shows up even with a new sound card. I need help.

I started with sigmatel now have soundblaster working on a new pc with VISTA.

Back from holidays and raring to not start!!

I wonder how many people are still unable to record? I have tried every permutation in the book and I simply cannot get both sound and microphone recording together. It's one or the other I'm afraid. I have followed every piece of advice on here and not one worked. Very, very frustrating and a whole Sunday wasted messing about on this new computer with the new Carlos Fandango' Vista on it...that doesn't work.

Ok...I got Vista to work...

The key (for me) was right-clicking the speaker in the taskbar and going to playback devices. then right clicking on the speakers that were checked and "Working". go to properties, then Levels tab.

This tab has the following:

"Playback Control" (with a slider)

"Auxiliary" (with slider at ZERO and the button with the speaker in it with a red circle and line through it indicating "NO")

"S/PDIF-In" (with slider at ZERO and the button with the speaker in it with a red circle and line through it indicating "NO")

"Line-In" (with slider set to 45, but the button with the speaker in it with a red circle and line through it indicating "NO")

"Microphone" (slider set to 90 and the button with the speaker in it "ON"; meaning without the red circle and line through it)

Scroll down one spot and there was:

"Wave" (slider set to 40 and the button with the speaker in it "ON"; just like the "Microphone" button)

Ask me how logical it is and you'll get a shrug from me. I still hate Vista so far...

After much messing about with all the different instructions I got my mic to work but it is very quiet and every mic setting is at full blast even on the flash player. I may have to give singsnap up. Can some please ask microsoft why they are such jerks, I had windows 2000 before, a system that actually worked with everything now on vista everything is complicated and the sound settings especially suck big time.

Thank you so much!! It worked beautifully!! Woohoo! LOL

I have been battling with Vista Home Premium on my new machine for a week. I transferred my very reliable Soundblaster Audigy 2 soudcard from my old machine into the new one - a lot of the software and mixing capabilities wouldn't take. Even with the upgrade patch there were problems. I bought a new Soundblaster X-Fi Gamer Xtreme. Very complex, lots of funtions. Still wouldn't work properly. Had to send it back.

I'm going back to XP before I need therapy.

The Creative website mention on numerous occasions the different architecture Vista uses for sound.

This was almost great, however when i did Step 3. and Right clicked in the 'blank area' and selected Show Disabled Devices, I didn't get anything more to materialize, any suggestions?

I am right with ya Tina I have followed EVERYONE's instructions and every way possible. I only hear music NO VOICE. I just bought a new computer with Vista of course. But today I even went out and bought a new Soundblaster X-fi to help matters cause it sounded TERRIBLE worse than my old computer when I was just singing everything thru the speakers cause I had a usb mic and obviously that didn't work. So now I have a new soundblaster, and a NEW mic even and STILL NO VOICE! This is driving me insane!!! how can something so enjoyable turn into such a nightmare, ALL because I wanted to have better sound quality. I basically got a new computer, another new soundcard for the brand new computer lmao, and it doesn't work at all. I was better off with the old one and my crap-tastic sounding recordings, at least I could play, now ..NOTHING! and none of the advice or sticky's I've read have helped, and I even have a friend talking me thru some stuff on email. THIS IS NUTS!! is it supposed to be this difficult??? hehe

Any updates on how to get this working through horrible vista?

Like everyone else I am having the same problems. Mine is a new entertainment pc so should work but vista is giving me big headaches with the sound configuring. With Laras instructions it doesnt work as I dont get all the slider options. No only getting voice or music. Maybe we should invite Vista onto the site!

Actually, I think that is the only way forward. I would like them to explain to me how an 'improved' verfsion of windows can be launched onto the market that is less flexible that the previous version. I am going to ask them to look at this. Maybe they will work on a patch to fix the problem and give us our singing back!!!

What do I do. I installed Vista Ultimate on my laptop (I use both of my computers for music, but my desktop stays in the studio), and now it won't recognize my mic port at all. Do you have any suggestions?

Reply by neo_waxworksGOLD

my best advice to anyone wanting to get it working on vista... Install XP... Vista just plain sucks...you know it is bad when even pc mags are now starting to talk about how bad it is...
it is 100% completely M$ fault too, they want to blaim the soundcard makers for having bad drivers, but M$ is the one that changed everythign and removed Hardware audio acceleration support. This effectively killed almost all effects most current soundcards support. They have been able to get a few working again reverb and the like, but it is buggy...
M$ claims they HAD to make the changes because of people pirating music, DMRA laws etc, all total BS... they wanted to control everything yuo do on a PC and have their hand in HOW you use stuff...

I beta tested Vista.. needless to say even on my new laptop, I immediately did a dual boot setup and have not booted to Vista since...only kept vista on it for warrenty purposes

ok yall that afford it just go buy a cheap behringer mixer 4 channel 49 bucks and a cheap soundblaster live 24 bit card 29 bucks run out your soundblaster into mixer for your music them plug mic directly to mixer then take your outputs from mixer and go into line in on your existing onboard sound card easiest fix walla your in buisness

Reply by TaffyGOLD

I agree with neo_waxworks. I've spent too many hours trying to get vista to work on here and it's a hopeless case....all my recordings come out very quiet even though they are deaffening volumes when I use the snap recorder if you want to sing on line stick with XP it's the only way :-)

Reply by Jodie1980

Hello everyone!

I just got vista and discovered that Sound Blaster Live 24 bit External is completely useless with it!! Was told to download and update drivers but nothing worked.

Now have new soundcard Soundblaster X-Fi which works but having trouble with levels so if anyone can tell me what levels to have for best performance it would be really appreciated especially where the effects are concerned - I get a lot of feedback on mic!!

Ok Jason...........this is what shows up on mine....not the same as yours....can you help please?

Reply by muziklover

Doing this actually made my problem worse. Before, I could hardly hear the music but could hear my voice just fine. After setting the stereo mix to enable and making it the default device, I could hear the music just barely but couldn't hear myself at all. So it had the opposite result of what I wanted. What else can I try? I have Vista by the way.

Just found this little piece of info for those who do not have stereo mix or what u hear show up;

If the "Stereo Mix" type device did Not show up in the "Sound" window when right-clicking and selecting Show Disabled Devices, it may indicate that you have Integrated Sound, and recording streaming, etc. is Not supported. In that case (on a Desktop PC), installing a sound card into an available slot should solve the problem.

Ha. I spent many hours attempting to get sound to work on "VISTA" all to no avail, worse thing is lots of people who listened were leaving comments of " great singing" and "Wtg!" etc. ( people are so nice here on Singsnap .) Then I discovered from one or two close pals that nobody could actually hear anything ? ha-ha. So I had to delete the last months recordings and give up singing !! (at least until I get to revert to windows XP....... :-)

Reply by 8thNoteChill

The problem is most likely not with Vista. The ability to select "stereo mix" is a function of the sound card. If you do not have the appropriate sound card you will be unable to find "stereo mix" and therefore, snap will not work.

This was my case.. so I had to improvise! Here is my set-up (w/o using stereo mix) :

1. The line out of my computer or "speaker out": I put a 2 way splitter.

2. So, I plug my pc speakers into one half of the splitter.

3. Run a guitar chord with an 1/8 inch adapter into the other splitter.

4. The other end of the guitar chord is plugged into input channel 1 on my four channel mixer.

5. My microphone is plugged into inout channel 2 or my mixer.

6. I use the "REC OUT" of my mixer (red and white a/v output) I bought a cheap adapter cable at walmart which has Red and White A/v (Right & left) on one end and an 1/8 in jack on the other.

7. The 1/8 inch jack is plugged into my line in on my computer. You can use mic in also, but you get much better sound quality using line in *if you have the option

Here's a summary:

I split my speaker output..one side feeds my speakers the other side feeds my mixer. Microphone feeds mixer. Mixer A/V output feeds my computer line in, or mic input.

It sounds alot more technical that it really is. I love this set-up due to the fact that if volumes are not mixed properly, I no longer have to adjust volume settings on my computer. All of my volume control is now done by tweaking my mixer knobs. I hope this helps you guys out.

I had a bit of trouble getting this working but my mistake was following the instructions and not enabling the line 'IN' device I needed.

1) Right click the speaker in the bottom right of the screen.

2) Left click playback devices

3) Right click speakers and choose properties.

4) Click the 'levels' tab.

If any of the listed items with 'IN' in the description have a red circle beside a picture of a speaker click on it to enable it. (Also ensure there is something to hear by increasing the volume level slider to 45. If you find to correct one you will begin to hear your voice through the headphones or speakers when you talk.

I hope this helps.

I do not have a what you hear button it says real tek digital mixer or something...I get the music through real good it is my voice I cant get through? Any idea I have the mic boost all the way up. I can make me sound like I am in a tunnel or bathroom, just cant make voice louder inthe mix.

Reply by OKCoyote

See you guys are all saying to change settings under the "Levels" tab... but I don't have any of those settings. The only setting there is "Internal Speaker/Headphone."

I guess this won't be happening for me. No voice this way, will have to return to original settings and turn my music volume way up so the mic can pick it up.

I have this crappy Vista on my computer and NONE of the above things help me. I have the vista home premium or something. I was recording this morning the mic was working ..wel at least it was recording although NOT well. I posted a question about the record quality or lack there of. I have major scratchiness. I have no idea what I did but suddenly the setup wizard came up when I went in to record another song and I can't figure out how to get it back working. I have one major issue after another with my computer and I am about to put it and my head thru a wall as is my family...is there anyone who can help me out there? The only itemsI have when I go into the sound mixer is microphone, rear mic and line in so none of the above mentioned helps and as far as that link for the sigmatel sound card I have a gateway and I'm not willing to open another can of worms.
thanks anybody

Ive gone thru these steps and enabled "Stereo mix", but now when I record my mic is disabled and the music is very distorted and muddy. It doesnt let me have "stereo mix" and "microphone" enabled at the same time.

By right clicking the orange speaker in your task bar, click sound manager, and then on microphone, and make sure to set the playback volume all the way up. Also, make sure it's not muted. This worked for us by making the mic and music sync together. I hope it works for you.
