Don't those players that do test the sound on other sites just record a small chunk for you to listen to? Usually what I do, is just record a small bit of the song... stop and listen, then adjust and go back.

I think it would be nice to have ways to test the sound and microphone on the player that way you know if your microphone is working and that the sound level is correct.
