I added a mixer driver to my sigma tel audio card on laptop it doesnt have the mic either

This is not looking good
I thought the Creative card was the last point of hope for those using a Laptop without stereo mix from onboard sound in XP.
I have read about it on the IBM forums, and I know it can be used for recording with the What U hear, but I didnt realise you'd lost the ability to use the mic.
Dell have done the same on their laptops...see here <those are both new Vostros. They released a driver to give back stereo mix, then took away the mic, so I guess they are just mapping the sound round that part of the chip and taking away the mic function.
I don't know a solution I'm afraid, just better warn others BUYER BEWARE!!

when I go to recording control on Creative it shows the what u hear, mic, line-in and S/PDIF-IN..

Unless there is another driver for your creative card that allows it, this is not looking good.
I see what I can find tomorrow tho it's not looking good

Looking at creatives site, there is only one driver here for that card dated Release date: 27 Aug 07

Thats prolly what came on the CD with the card.
Leave this with me as I know someone else with same card and I can ask them if I see them...may take a while though
Knowing this does or does NOT work is going to be helpful to someone, just a shame it cost you to find out.
I know someone with this card in Vista (X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook) and does NOT give you any mix option!!

Reply by split10

Ok I mananged to ask another guy who has a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook, and I can verify that you are correct and it will NOT give those wishing to do mic over music in XP the ability to use the mic at the same time as it mutes it.
I don't know how you could proceed from here unless you get an adaptor to make your Express Card slot take one of the older Creative PCMCIA cards.
This would need much research before buying though.

I guess time to return the card to dell for a refund then if they will do that, cant believe they would sell something saying it would work.. At the beginning of the thread there were links to d/l a mixer device for dell laptops I did go to site and d/l a mixer device but it worked same as the sb card i had music but no voice it has a mixer and a mic when i go to recording control but not sure what needs to be clicked and what not..

Reply by musicmeister57GOLD

I took out the sb card out of slot rebooted and when i came back i was on my lappy card I went to control panel made sure everything there was card on laptop and ran the hardware i had sound to mic then and then set up volume control unclicking pc speakers and then to recording control I had stereo mix, cd and mic pushed ok and sang a song and had both voice and music playback. Thanks for all your time with me. I appreciated it I wasnt about to give up..haha

if you have a sound card, wearing your headphones does not make a difference. The music is going to come through your sound card wether you have your headphones on or not. Heck you have your speakers turned off and the music is still there. Anyways, what kind of sound card do you have? You need to get a mix of both mic and music. By either having "stereo mix" "what u hear", "wave-out" or "wave-mix". You can find these in your recording properties.

this is for brscam63
follow the pictures. I hope you have XP.
First picture is of your volume playback controls( yours might be longer but this is how mine looks, a general idea.)

Click on Options ( left hand corner) and a drop down file with 3 options will show. Click on the one that says Properties.
Once there you will see this:

Where it says Recording click it and that's when you will see what it is says under it. Mine says "what u hear" cuz I have a Creative Sound Blaster sound card. If you don't an SB card, then you may see one of the other options you mentioned on your post. Make sure that the box next to one of those options has a check mark on it. All you really need checked on those options is the "mix" option and microphone. Now click OK and this picture will come up:

See the black circle. That is the "mix" levels. You can raise to where you like. I keep mine a little lower than what this picture is showing. This is how loud or soft your recordings will playback on the SS recorder. Anyways, make sure that the box UNDER it is ticked. If on your recording properties it shows that the Microphone is ticked, then that means all that is going to come out on your recordings is your voice and the music will be SUPER soft. So, when the mix option is ticked, then you should get a mix of music and voice. This is how it works for most of us but it appears that it doesn't work that way with all sound cards. You can try it, and hope that it works for you.
Do you know what kind of sound card you have?? If not, it shows you on the left hand corner the name of the sound card on your Volume properties.
Like this picture:

Hope all this helps
Good luck!
Jess

Someone please help
When I run the Set Up Wizard, if I have the Stereo Mix box checked for Recording Control, when I am doing the sound test and I speak into the microphone the level meter does not respond but when I click the play sound button the level meter does. So if I change the Recording Control and place a check in the Microphone box just the opposite happens. During the wizard sound test, when I speak into the microphone the meter responds but when I click the sound button it does not.

I've also noticed if I have the Stereo Mix checked and try to record a song, it doesn't record my voice and the music that is recorded is unbearably distorted. I have a RealTek AC97 Audio sound card. Any suggestions? Thank you...SondraWolf

I can tell you what your doing wrong (I think)
A sound card has 2 sides to it; Recording and Playback. When you SELECT stereo mix that's on the recording side of the card, and as a safety feature (so you dont get feedback if your using speakers) windows mutes the mic on the playback side. (or turns it right down)
Stereo mix on the recording side (thats the only side its on) records whatever comes in on from the playback side so if your mic is muted it won't work.
You need to select stereo mix on the recording side, and then go options > properties > tick playback OK and unmute the mic or turn it up.
If your music is loud and distorted turn the wave down on the playback side.
If that doesn't make sense or I lost you I can post you a link to a video that explains it better.

Hi, I made a recording of me playing (not really) and attempting to get my music recorder set just perfect.

Link to the post in action: http://www.singsnap.com/snap/r/bf1290550

If you pay attention to the recording closely--it shows how important the mixer setting is to recording. It can completely distort your music; and then if you have it set right, it canmake your music sound perfect.

HELP!

I have Windows Vista on a laptop with Realtek sound card.

At first recording was easy.. I just did it through the microphone and made sure I sat close enough to the speakers so the microphone could pick up both the music and my voice.

Suddenly, the quality of my recordings dropped.

Now everything sounds muffled and I can't get my voice to be loud enough.

I've tried out every setting I can think of.

Has anyone else got the same setup and know which settings work?

I couldn't get stereo mix to work either as my voice ended up being way too soft to hear properly..

I'd really appreciate some help as I've been battling with this for 4 days with no luck and can't really record anything new.

Reply by rosieposy8

Oh I get it now! Turn music down (on mixer tab on RHS on taskbar) when recording.. then turn back up to playback.

This sorts out having too soft voice .

Thanks slip10!!

I hope someone can help me............I have been recording just fine for months----recorded a song this morning. Came back tonight and suddenly, and I mean suddenly something is crazy.
When recording all that is coming through is my voice and no music from the recording. It has got to be simple because it was working fine.........
my stero mix is checked and I went through all the steps for checking the sound properties.
Anyone have any ideas??? :(( Thanks so much, Charlotte

My sound and music is fine The mix I can fix, but when I play back and send it really breaks up at the beginnng of song then it straightens out after I start singing a few words. What can the problem be? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Gloria

Hi
While I am not using Vista I did put it on one of my computers to try and clear up some of the problems people are having using the Sound Blaster Live-24 bit USB on Vista and not having “what you hear” to record from.
I will try and make this as short as possible.

If you plug it in, Windows will install Vista drivers for it and there will be no “what you hear” to record from.

If you download the "latest" drivers from Creative USB_VIDRV_LB_1_01_0002 you will have all the features like 5.1, on screen displays but NO “WHAT YOU HEAR” to record from.

You need to install the first set of drivers Creative released for the SoundBlaster Live 24 bit USB sound card for Vista….USBVS_PCDRV_LB_1_00_0060.

You will lose the 5.1 feature and the on screen display but you will then have “what you hear” to record from and EAX effects.
What a pain but if I can save someone some aggravation trying to figure it out that is good.
You can Google USBVS_PCDRV_LB_1_00_0060 and find many sites to download it from.
Good luck,
Ed

(This is a short blog I wrote about sound properties on your PC. Maybe it will help somebody, maybe it won't, but I thought I would share it in case it will be helpful to some.)

Most might be familiar with the way Windows XP controls sound, but I thought I would put what I know in a blog so some could reference it if needed.

First, a note on sound cards. There are usually 3 connections to a sound card; Mike, Line and Out. Mike and line are "inputs", and Out is of course an output that generally goes to your speakers. Most will likely just put their microphone directly into the "Mike" input. Some who use effects devices like an echo may input their microphone into such a device and place the output of that device into the "Line" input to the sound card.

Your "Sound properties" are the combination of "Volume control" and "Recording control".

Also, realize that any software you are using to play/record the song you are doing is actually just manipulating the controls explained here in "Sound properties". This includes the player/recorder you are using on a site. That is just a software program. Some people are using software they have to record the song rather than the site`s recorder.

Now Volume.

You access the "Sound properties" by double clicking on the little speaker icon at the very lower right of your screen where the time of day is displayed.

This will pop-up a window called "Volume control". This window controls what comes out your speakers.

The far left slider is "Volume control" itself. This should usually be all the way up. It is the master control for all the sound coming out to your speakers.

The next one is "Wave". Wave is generally any sound file your computer is playing. So you can adjust this to control how loud the background music is when you sing to a karaoke song because the song is actually a file being played.

The "Line in" slider controls your microphone volume if you used the "Line" connection of your sound card (used probably if you used an effects device).

On the far right is the "Microphone" output. This controls how loud your singing is coming through your microphone and out the speakers. (used if you went directly into the "Mike" input of your sound card)

By adjusting the output of the music (Wave, slider) and your voice through the microphone (Line or Microphone, slider), you affect the balance of the music to your vocals. So, if your music is fine but your vocals are too low adjust your "Microphone (or Line in)" slider in to get it the way you want it.

This also determines how loud the song will be that you hear while you are recording.

One note on headphones. It is better to use headphones because if you use your speakers when you record your microphone will pick up the sound coming out of them, to some degree, as you record. Using headphones, the microphone only records your voice. Better.

Now recording.

To access the recording properties, on this "Volume control" window, click "Options" at the upper left. This brings a drop-down menu. Click on "properties" from that menu. This pops another small window called "Properties" believe it or not. From that window notice the "playback" button is selected. Now you select the "Recording" button instead. Click "Okay". Now your original "Volume control" window has been replaced by a "Recording control" window.

The "Stereo mix" slider controls how much level you are recording at. (Be sure this check-box is checked.) This is how well the recording function "hears" the settings you have made in "Volume control".

If your recordings are coming out distorted this slider is too high. It`s like your music is being screamed into the recorders ear. Turn the "Stereo mix" slider down little by little until your recordings don`t distort.

So the "Volume control" is how loud you are singing/playing your music and the balance of the music to your voice.

The "Recording control" is how well you are being heard by the recorder.

I hope this helps somebody .LAngeloMysterioso
